Join the Register of Professional Contractors
Membership is free but subject to approval. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and agree to abide by our Code of Practice and Service Charter.
The application process is made up of 3 stages:
Stage 1 – Qualifications: through the online application you can list your qualifications and upload copies of memberships and certificates. This helps demonstrate that you have the technical ability to carry out the work that people are relying on you to do.
Stage 2 – Experience: in the online application form, we will ask you about your experience – the type of work you do and where your strengths lie. This helps us assess whether you meet the criteria for entry to the Register. This stage is important, as only applicants who meet the required standards will progress to Stage 3.
Stage 3 – Character: at this point, applicants who have met the requirements at stages 1 and 2 will complete a more detailed questionnaire. This is designed to explore character – including your attitude towards customers and the way you approach your business – to help us understand your suitability for the Register.
At this stage, each application is reviewed. In some cases, we may need to ask further questions, request clarification, or arrange an interview. For most applicants, however, the assessment will be made on a straightforward pass or fail basis.
We recognise that not everyone who does great work has a list of qualifications. That should not stop you from applying. In some sectors formal qualifications are essential. In others, there are no set requirements, and many skilled tradespeople have built their reputation entirely through the quality of their work.
Qualifications alone do not always prove competence. For example, a fully qualified plumber may be less experienced with certain types of work such as boiler installations, and more experienced or even specialise in other areas such as ground source heat pumps. Everyone has areas of strength and areas where they are less skilled.
That’s why we look beyond qualifications – your experience and character carry just as much weight in demonstrating your suitability as a professional contractor.
